The Javelin and Lancer disassembled. This shows the ease of storage and transport of the models and the variety of flyable configurations.

Between afternoon showers we had a brief opportunity to fly the Javelin with the Lancer tail surfaces. Flew great.

We added a couple of magnets to the leading and trailing edges of the Lancer wing to allow mounting it on the Javelin fuselage.

The Lancer wing fitted to the Javelin fuselage. For the tail, we are using a 8 1/2 inch wing from a tiny swing control model. The tiny wing works well as a stabilizer on the Javelin/Lancer models.

A late afternoon test flight of this combination of parts. Flew well. This is the beauty of interchangeable parts. It gives one the ability to make up a variety of different models from a few parts.

i hate to interrupt your build posts.

i will have my Fly Boy built someday ( i hope! :) .)

it's like a Lancer and Javelin, sort of.

did you ever do any Free Flight or Contest flying?

i've looked at AMA site and can't make head or tails of it.

Not at all, Regular Guy, your comments are no interruption. Rather, I appreciate the comments and the opportunity to share our experiences with tether flown models.

We have flown some simple free flight models. But most of our model flying has been with controline models and now-a-days with tether model. As a teenager we flew a few competition events. But most of of our model flying is done for fun and in the back yard or parks.

We hope you have good luck with your Fly Boy. We have built three Fly Boy wings and they fly well.

there's a lot i could talk about here.

i'll just zero in on what i think is important.

IF Guillow's put into production the #802 Harpoon that

would put them back in the Free Flight business more.

that 34" wingspan is pretty darn interesting! :)

A few posts earlier we were showing modifications done to the Javelin and Lancer components in order to make them interchangeable. Today we modified the Javelin wing to allow it to be fitted to the Lancer. The Lancer now flown as the 'John Deere' version :wink:

Nice looking glider I'd like to try the Lancer, Javelin, Arrow, or FlyBoy someday, as a single cell lipo powered glider with Spektrum micro gear.

The tether flying works well. I found that the plane does not have to be even close to capable of stable free flight gliding, but can still tether fly. I once built an overweight small Cub as a micro rc attempt. In "aw what the heck" mode, I slapped a 130 brushed DD motor with 4 little 120mAh NiMh cells in it, as a tether flyer. Flew fine.

Thanks for your comments, Bill. The 700, 800, and 4000 series models have proven to be great flying models for us, especially with a few simple modifications. I agree with you that an unstable model if flown at a sufficient airspeed will fly OK by tether control. However, we prefer our models to have stable flying characteristics as they are more simple and predictable fliers for us. Higher airspeed is reserved for windy and bad weather days. We have these often enough, so we get our share of bad weather flying :(

Finally, we are able to return to working on the Cessna 180. We've decided to modify it to a profile fuselage and use a removable wing mounting that will be compatible with the Cloud Buster and Fly Boy wings.

Here is the center lamination of the profile fuselage with the vertical tail attached.

The original Cessna fuselage side frames are glued to the center lamination. The cardboard pattern is used in cutting the nose part of the central lamination and the nose doublers.

Before the nose doublers are attached, a slot is cut in the nose to hold an nut and bolt which will be used as an adjustable nose weight.

Installation of the wing and tail mounting platforms. The wing mount platform is 7/8 inch wide. This will allow the use of our CloudBuster and FlyBoy wings on this model. The tail mounting platform A is held in place on the horizontal tail by a pair of overlapping strips on both sides of the platform. This will allow the tail to slide on or off of the platform. The platform will be glued to the bottom of the slot at the rear of the fuselage.
