How to make a radial engine look real

Anyone have any tips on how to make the dummy radial engine that is supplied with the Thomas Morse, Nieuport, and others look more realistic? I have painted mine with real exhaust manifold paint, which looks good, but the skill is n the details. I would like to make it look more like a real one, maybe the term is lightly distressed?

I know they sell special stuff to make models look weathered, maybe that would work.

That is where I got the inspiration from. Micro-Mark sells it; it is just more fun if you come up with something that isn't store bought. I may end up buying the stuff, and thank you for your help.

This is what I did..bent some paper clips for push rods, added some pin heads for bolts .. and some copper wire for ignition ..low cost option

Another adventure begins. Engine parts. This Stearman comes with a 7 or 9 cylinder engine.
This is the 9 cylinder version. Crop dusting and air show Stearmans were retro fitted with
a 450 hp P+W engine. The task...make these parts look like one. Once the engine is complete
and detailed, build a plane to display it!

Williams Brothers makes a nice set of cylinders with exhaust and rods. The block you must provide , I used bass wood for mine.
