Guillow's Tours

Post by Xanadu »

Anyone here ever managed to get a tour though Guillow's?

You can see the building from street view on Google maps, be very interesting to see the inner workings.

Nothing really on that kind of stuff on the Guillow's site, minus some really cool older pictures.

Tours

Xanadu...once upon a time, in my general area anyway, one could visit all kinds of places and manufacturing facilities. I don't mean some ride thru thing like in Disney Land, I mean...old Hershey's, various breweries, taffy factories, bakeries...big ones, Mr. Peanut, Dept.Stores, telephone switchboards, a power plant, gee, you name it almost...of course, on several of these, you had to be associated with a group, or an in-house tour group sometimes for a nominal fee, and pix taking was not allowed.

I think such days are pretty much over now here though due to several reasons: liability, extra personel needed, sometimes concerns over industrial espionage/pix taken without permission, unruly children, higher insurance, and...let's face it, so many less places today of manufacturing and potential terrorism do not encourage visitations en masse anymore. Also, sometimes marketing studies would indicate a minimal ROI.

Places still so inclined might opt for small visitations by familiar people. Its possible to make a promo film short with a narrating tourguide to selectivly point out highlights to showcase a facility. Put it on dvd, and make it available free or at nominal charge. Sensitive areas should be avoided. With eg Guillows, some pix of flying models would be good and a walk thru of a museum like area decorated with model planes, new and old.

Guillows Tours

Post by rayd »

Yeah...thanks goose, something like that, but maybe more craftsman oriented. That's a good news fill in segment, shows lots of kids throwing gliders....and inside factory shots were of interest. Perhaps something along those lines, but on expanded basis, and more for craftsman. As an example, one can buy a nice dvd of eg tourist railroads, and likely others have such dvds. In a way, the stick model building is like a slice of Americana. In the past, and still now perhaps, people still seem to take an interest. But gliders only won't keep it alive. Craftspeople needed.
Hey goose, thanks for responding...I didn't catch on Guillows site.

I noticed the guillows president said that people seem to like guillows to stay the same, but i hope this isnt what is slowing down new kits from being produced and kits being laser cut. They alread have all of the plans, and very accurate ones at that (for the most part). I dont know how hard it it to laser cut them... I can send any plans i want (in CAD electronic form) and have them laser cut with no problems. Ive said this before, but there is something that I am missing. I would like to hear something from someone as high up as the president of the company, to let me know that they are actually doing something over there.

Maybe the TV show " How do they do that" or " How it's made" could do a show there on the kits.
