Forum Problems??

Post by rayd »

:?: This is an inquiry to Guillows. The Forum "Message Board" was out of commission yesterday up until about 11 am EST today. Was it for maintenance or some technical difficulty? Should you ever decide to pull the plug, kindly give us advanced notice so we can trade addresses if desired.

We are craftspeople, retirees, newbies, from all walks of life, civilian, military. We appreciate your supporting this forum. Besides us, it helps you and the hobby; a win win thing. (I was on a forum where plug was pulled overnight...many were disappointed.) Do keep us informed, and keep up the good work. Thank you.

Hello,

No, definitely NOT "pulling the plug" on the message board forum. Lots of good insight and help up here and we are very pleased that you modelers get to talk and help each other out with our model kits.

Right now I am trying to upgrade the phpBB forum software that runs the site and to do so I may/will have to "disable" the message board for a couple hours here and there. I will try and make it as seamless as possible.

Happy posting,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Will the new software handle the attachment of pictures direct? Having to do it the way things are at the moment is a real pain in the nether regions!

I'd love it if we could edit posts.

I've seen similar "forum software" allow that.

Looks like you can edits your posts now. Unfortunately this newer version of phpBB gives me fits when I login in via my work's VPN, but it's an issue with lots of websites so I just have to grin and bear it.

Edit: And upload attachments. But you won't see the picture unless you are logged in. It's a bandwidth thing and completely understandable and not an issue.

Hello All,

Yes, the new phpBB forum is up and running. I will be tweaking and monitoring for a few days to make sure all goes smooth.

I DID change the settings so users can edit their OWN posts, also have left ON the ability to add attachments for now. You can use, but I ask you please do not abuse an privelages until I can determine how much extra IT work this is going to be for me. As said above I'll be going over the forum settings "with a fine tooth comb" the next couple days and tweaking.

Hope this forums works well, happy posting

Mark, the subscription emails that notify you of new replies used to come from msgboard@balsamodels.com but it now appears to be using your own work email address which might not have been intentional. Thanks for the hard work on the forum, I think the picture uploading will be helpful for a lot of people and has the bonus side effect that pictures won't disappear from postings.

Mark:

It's looking good. Will likely take awhile to tweak and debug a little, and for us to get used to newer board, but kudos in order for a nice job overall. Thanks for your efforts. Ray

i think all users should be able to view photos as guests. It seems like more trouble to me to have to log in every time.

Mark...a Suggestion Box thread might be helpful in your fine tuning/monitoring the board, and keep members suggestions in one convenient place. E.G.,in my roaming around, I recently was finishing up a post, with an interuption in between, Fido, and had to step away a short while. Seems whatever I had on screen timed out, and message was lost in space. No big deal, but perhaps a gas tank kinda countdown thing or clock might be helpful showing how much time remaining. Actually, is there a time limit for a post? How long? Really, but such things might be easier to keep all in one spot, in my opinion. Thanks

Thank you for the upgrade, Mark!

I appreciate the edit button and other features.

You may get a lot of visitors here after Make Magazine #28 comes out. Hopefully get Guillow's some business, too!
