try puting an extra layer of dope where there will be decals. a better sealing job makes decaling easier.

So here are the photos after the doping.
I also mocked up the plane to get an idea of what it is going to look like and I'm pretty pleased. Just not sure whether I should gamble with the decals. I might fly it a couple of times and then do it if it is still in one piece!

I'll start to glue the pieces together real soon.
Take it easy

The wrong kind, tried the glue stick on the side panels and it stuck solid so I thought it would be sufficient but the windscreen was not as successful. I just moved on to something else and spilt some balsa cement on it and its marked it slightly. I might have to replace it now. Really ticked me off! Oh well what can you do.
I didn't try the balsa cement because I read on here that it can cloud the sheet but I still managed to spill some on it.

Go to your LHS (hopefully you have one near you)
i use some water based "canopy glue" that dries clear, non toxic, and pretty good with my canopies. i use it for all of my canpy jobs, and window jobs. works pretty well. i would recomend reading through Phugoids super piper cub build. i would go find it for you, but im in the middle of writing a history paper!

Hi Adw
Thanks for that. I did read the thread you mentioned and I saved it in my favourites but I must have missed that bit.
I learnt some valuable lessons last night:
1) Do not work when frustrated
2) Do not then continue to work when tired
3) Buy some canopy glue
I finally got the wind shield to stick on the one side that wasn't playing the game after finding some superglue. For how much I thought I had messed up the area last night in the cold light of day its not that bad - not that good but again not too bad. Again its a lesson learned and I'll be getting some canopy glue for my next build. The wing should hide most of it from a distance. Also if it flies none of that will matter!!!
I also sanded the paper down to the wood on the fuse to fix it to the rudder and I managed to sand too much (Was still angry at this point) and the tissue has dropped slightly in a small section. Not the end of the world but I'm sure that if I was fresh and calm it would not have happened.
Anyway here are some pictures of the progress of the plane glued together. They were on my phone yesterday at night so the quality is not so good.

We cant build perfect models straight away...Unfortunately! If the next build is just a little bit better I'll be happy.
History paper - I don't miss those - what era are you studying?
It must be hard trying to fit in building with school work.
Thanks again for the information.

I just realised that I didn't attach the windscreen quite right either - ha its all going wrong! To be honest I never gave it a thought and I trimmed it down to fit better the way I was doing it so its too late now (Should have realised something was not quite right)! Still its secure and fixed so it should be OK as it is.
It gives the plane character - Well that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

Cheers David
Don't worry I will - its all a big learning curve.
You don't just build fantastic models - I need to work at it gradually and these little incidents all make sure that I wont do it again (He says).
They are such great fun to do.
I'm getting a bit excited now to see whether she will fly.
If anyone asks i'll say it was a bird strike that chipped the windscreen

Oh and may I say your models are fantastic! I've loved reading your posts and seeing your work!
If I ever get remotely near that standard I'll be happy.

Hi Tom,
The canopy can be a bit fustrating.....
I tend to "tack" it in place with tiny amounts of superglue (CA) picked up on the end of a pin. Then once I'm happy run aliphatic resin in between the gap between the window and surround to fully secure it.......
The resin doesn't stick to the plastic 100% well, but it sticks it more than enough.

Hi Andrew
Thanks for the advice. I'll certainly give that a go next time. I didn't think that I had any superglue but I found some late last night.
I'm more disappointed that I didn't fit it properly. I was really tired yesterday after working in London and I think I should have left the plane alone for a night but I couldn't help it
! Also if I'd have looked at the picture on the plans more closely and virtual aerodrome AND your thread it wouldn't have happened!
Like I said earlier its all good for me to make these errors! It still doesnt look too bad and if she flies well I'll not think about the little errors!
It has drummed home to me to get the Cessna to make amends after these late errors!
Its a shame I'm working today because it looks like perfect flying weather where I am. I could have finished the build and done some trimming/flying.
Oh and where do you buy your balsa from for replacing wood? Is it SAMs again?
Tom

Thanks David that makes me feel better!David Duckett wrote:Thank you. I certainly understand frustration but I think your plane looks just fine. Bumps and grinds are part of the game, and the fun.
