WW II Aviation movie - Red Tails - Poll

Post by Pauli72 »

I am looking for some feedback from fellow WW II aviation enthusiasts regarding the new movie Red Tails. I'm trying to decide whether to go see it, or wait for it to come out on DVD.

If you have an opportunity to see it in IMAX 3D... Just do it...

I'd go see it if possible. FYI, several years ago, Laurence Fishburne starred in a HBO Video "The Tuskegee Airmen" which I thought was quite good. If the new movie is anything near that work, Red Tails should look great on a theater screen. You'll also see stories on the Military/Discovery type TV channels. A great story with drama and plenty of action.

Despite inaccuracies, I totally enjoyed Flyboys a few years back in a theater. It was much better as an overall experience than watching it on my TV from a dvd. But, sometimes we cannot make it to the theater, for many reasons....in which case, the rental or purchase of a dvd will have to suffice.

Thanks for the advice to go see it guys. :D I coudn't find it in 3D in my area, but it was definately worth seeing on the big screen. Even though the storyline got somewhat preachy and revisionist, the CG flight action, imagery, and special effects were awsome! I'm glad I didn't just wait for the DVD to come out.
I think the Guillow's P-51 Mustang is going to be my next kit purchase. LOL!

I don't know about the movie, but I read the book "Flyboys" a couple years ago. It was so good I read it thru again. I would sure love to see the "Red Tails" movie.

Lynn,

There's a good chance the movie "Flyboys" is not the same story as the book you read. Going out on a limb, I'll assume you read James Bradley's book about the WWII Naval aviators who flew a mission to take out a Japanese communications outpost on the island of Chichi Jima - great book by the way. The Flyboys movie is about American fliers in the Lafayette Escadrille during WWI. I haven't seen it but I understand what it lacks in storyline is made up in exciting aerial sequences (much like Red Tails).

You're right. The book IS about ChiChi Jima, etc., including a short blurb on George H.W. Bush. It is a grat book.

Lynn,

This movie is definately worth going to see. I was a little disapointed after paying to go see The Aviator, and Pearl Harbor on the big sreen, which is why I asked about this movie.

I read Flyboys a few years ago and I thought it was really good. I just finished Messershmitts Over Sicily last week, and if you liked Flyboys, you may want to peruse this one too. Other than being written from different sides of the conflict, the soldier/combat aviator story is pretty similar.

I was listening to an R&B station one morning and one of the DJ's said his uncle tried to make it into the Airmen, but they kicked him out because he broke off a wing. His fellow DJ's kidded him by saying maybe if he just ripped a seat cover they would have let it slide. Greatest of respect for the Tuskagee Airmen but this was a humorous anecdote about them.
