STATIC MODEL BUILDING

I wonder if any of you kit builders build for static display and NOT for flying. I have been building over 65 years and tried one time, as a child, to fly an airplane I had spent hours building. It was a disaster and discouraged me forever more. Now,I build the skeleton as per plans, but cover the fuselage with tulle, a dressmakers mesh fabric. And then (I cringe to state this part to all you expert builders) I cover the tulle with drywall compound and sand to a perfectly smooth surface. I cover the wings with sheet balsa (top and bottom), add details, to extent possible, and paint. Like a friend said to me, "You don't care how much they weigh, do you?
This is true, as I build to look at; not crash. " Different strokes for different folks."

I build my static builds right to the plans. covered with the kit silkspan. 3 coats of dope and paint.

When I built a static model I would plank and sheet it, seal the balsa with thinned orange shellac and start finishing with lacquer based auto body filler. It creates an amazing base for finishes, practically wind tunnel model smooth. However, I haven't built a static model in a long (Long!) time I have not checked with an automotive paint store to see if that product is still available.
