new 700 series plane
Guillows is releasing a new kit in the 700 series. It's a edge 540 stunt plane. They descibe it as a great flyer. It has a wing span of 20-3/16" I like the idea of new planes. but I still would like some re-releases.

This is a Dale Barker design and is a reasonably quick build. Photo is of an early prototype I built.

I'll have it at the Blacksheep squadron table at the AMA EXPO in January. http://amaexpo.com/

Howard, That is a nice design and build but I'm not a big fan of the Edge. Still I think the RC folks are going to love this..Of course to support Guillows I will buy one.

I like it. S going to look cool done up in red and yellow, With some blue pinstriping.
I do not like the Lack of pass through to the interior for the wing junctures. makes it difficult to build a proper Wing box. I would gladly sacrifice a tiny bit of weight to make sure the wings stay ON the plane in an adverse landing. Not much just a full through wing spar at the wing root fuselage juncture.

Re: new 700 series plane
Joe,
I did have that criticism of the design. It's a difficult design choice caused by the mid-wing/high thrust line configuration of the real airplane. For rubber power you can't make the wing one piece since the motor goes right through center of the wing. What you don't see in the photo is that there are two pins locating the wing root to sheet side panels on each side of the fuselage. They are not the dowel pins I used in the Beaver and Porter designs but are square balsa stock. I made some suggestions on other ways to do this and I have not seen a production kit, yet, to see how it ended up. The strength does not seem to be a problem on the prototype I built. Of course, if you were doing an electric powered conversion you could easily carry the locating pins through to the other wing. Just be very careful to build the fuselage straight and you will not have any trouble with this one.

Re: new 700 series plane
This kit looks great. I'll probably end up buying and building one soon after it comes out. The best part is that its the third new kit Guillow's has released in the last couple years. I can't help but think that this means that more people are becoming interested in balsa model building! Would I like to see some of the older kits (100 Series) reissued, yes. But is not very realistic, and these new kits are great, and I'm sure someday I will buy the Edge 540 for my grandkid and have fond memories of building it as a teenager. I think we all look nostalgically at the kits that are discontinued, but if they were in production, we would pay as much attention to them as the F-15.

Re: new 700 series plane
I'll have to get this kit for an rc conversion. I've never been an aerobat fan, but I've built pretty much everything else and have been thinking of adding a few to the collection. Recently built a Herr Pitts bipe as the LHS had it there (what the heck purchase and build) but the Edge looks even more attractive as I really want a monoplane aerobat. I have the perfect micro outrunner, ESC, and 2 linear servos waiting for it in the drawer. Looks like 2 more micro linear servos and I'll be ready to go.
I could use the break, as I'm scratch building a Miles Aerovan at the moment. Looks like a nice straightforward design.
Compared with the 3-view scratch builds I usually do, it's almost an RTF.kittyfritters wrote:This is a Dale Barker design and is a reasonably quick build. Photo is of an early prototype I built.

I just went to guillow.com, for the purpose of looking at the modeler's photos. Sure enough, the new Edge kit now shows up as a new product, ready to order.Arlo DiPasquale wrote:This kit looks great. I also would love to see the older kits come out. I was amazed to discover all the kits that Guillows discontinued, many of which I'd like to build. I've been lucky to get a few such as the Rumpler and Storch. One would think that with LC rather than having to construct dies, they could inexpensively produce anything, after making a few simple molds for plastic parts. I imagine some of the problem is that hobby shops will only stock so many kits. They likely determine what sells most, and some wouldn't buy the lesser sellers. I personally wish they would re-release almost all of the older kits as rc. I haven't come across many that I wouldn't be interested in.
