USS-Frigiate-Constitution-Guillows-balsa-model_ship

Post by shawn32671 »

Yesterday I purchased a Guillows USS Frigate Constitution balsa model ship on Ebay for just $13.99 plus $6.99 shipping. This seemed like an amazing price to me as I'd never seen one or even knew Guillows once did ship modeling.. I haven't received the kit yet of course but wondered if anyone could tell me more about this kit and other ship kits that Guillows once manufactured and if there are any resources online about them...I googled but no luck. Thanks loads.

I don't mind it being the only ship kit they made, I was happy to find it anyway...I've built plank on hull and solid hull ship kits for years and this looked like it'd be a cool build. I just hope I can find more info as well as hopefully someone who has built one. Then again it may be worthwhile to just hold onto it as is since it seems to be rare...I'd much rather build it and enjoy it though....anyone have thoughts on this?

Well ... I must say that I have NO experience with balsa ship building, but my first thought on this kit is that it looks like this will be a HUGE undertaking! Just a glance at all the rigging in the box photo scares me. Ha Ha :D

Believe me, it's a chore, I'm by no means an expert but rigging is one of the most fun parts of the build in my opinion....It should be a fun build...My current ship build is an Albatros 2 mast ship model by Constructo and the rigging so far went fairly smoothly....and wouldn't you know? I have a video of that on youtube as well lol.
Below are parts one two and three of my progress so far.

Hey Shawn ... I watched all three videos. WOW, what a lot of NICE WORK!!! My compliments to you. Much too intricate for me though. I'll stick to building airplanes for sure! :D

I do remember seeing those on the shelf at a hobby shop. Long time ago.
As far as collectability, I'd say the price you paid is an indicator of that.
Also, as far as I know, it's the only Guillow ship model they produced.

Very interested to see the build on this.

thanks for the reply, I think I'll be building it for sure, even if it was to turn out to have value, I'd still build it, I can't see a nice kit just sitting boxed up on a shelf
