$75 mosquito

Hey does anybody want another early Christmas present ? ebay has a unbuilt 800 series mosquito buy it now for $75 bucks plus shipping. I know there are a lot of people that want one, so this might be the deal for you. I have thought about getting it myself, but I just don't have this plane on my wish list. The REALLY sad part is when they come to their senses and realize that they've actually spent $173.99 on a box of balsa sheet, sticks and paper . Might have to do some 'splainin' to the spouse as well .

Then again, there are folks who are perfectly happy to spend that much on a kit that they think they just can't live without .

I bought a laser cut FW190 400 series, Spitfire 400 die cut, and a Thomas More scout kit for under $100 on Ebay. I know they still make them, but I would'nt pay alot even if they were discontinued.the TM Scout was from 1989 and came with an old brochure. There are a couple discintinued planes; like the B-29 Superfortress and spaceshuttle. Does Guillows still sell the plans? I'm interested in the shuttle, but assume there's probably alot of plastic pieces in it that would be hard to get.

I find it interesting how some kits such as the Mosquito and the B-29 have appreciated dramatically since they were phased out of production, but the space shuttle has not. Maybe now that the space shuttle fleet is retired we will see the price of the kit rise too.

The Space Shuttle kit is usually more like $20. I've never paid more than $140 for each of the four B-29 kits I've purchased and two of them for under $100. No more than about $40 for a Mosquito and $60 for a P-39. Those kinds of prices are rare so you have to be vigilant and diligent. One year I sold a B-29 for $100 profit over what I paid for it and it took me a little over a year to replace it for about $140.

The best way to find good prices is to already have that kit in your stash. Murphy's Law says you only see good deals on kits you already have.

I waited for a B-29 until one fell into my lap for free. Somebody I know found it at a garage sale for about $10 and gave it to me. The best deal I got on eBay though was a Pfalz D.3 for $30. Normally I see them going in the $50-70 range.

I often use basswood as a substitute in areas I think need strength.One thing I noticed is its tendency to split along the grain when making small parts or cutting. I never considered making an entire frame with it. will you cut parts from balsa now that WW2 is over? or will you try the basswood? Either way I can't wait to see it. You have some very nice models. I'm still sanding and filling my P-40. Everytime I think I'm gonna be ready to start painting I notice a spot I think is'nt perfect and redo it. Then I have to wait a day for it to dry etc... But I think my patience will pay off in the end. I hope.

Spruce. Spruce is a good material. I used that on cap strips and for strength. It's more flexible.A little more sinewy than balsa and basswood. it sands nicely also. It does cost more however.
