torsion bar landing gear

Post by davidchoate »

David Lewis posted a CSD drawing of some torsion gear. I am unclear as to the wrapping with thread and how is the best way to attach it to the bulkhead. I'm considering this method for my PT-17.

The thread wrap binds the wire to the former at the point where the wire exits the fuselage.

1. Pre-drill holes for the thread in the former with a tapered reamer.
2. Complete the fuselage frame and sand it.
3. Tack glue the landing gear wire in place. I use a cardboard jig to align the landing gear struts (as shown in my Champ #301 build thread). This insures that the airplane will sit level and track straight. A small amount of toe-in is beneficial.
4. Thread a sewing needle and hold the needle with pliers. Insert the pliers through a cabin side window or other fuse opening and wrap the wire, binding it to the former.
5. Apply glue to the thread wrap and the end of the torsion bar vertical anchor leg.
