Decals for Guillow's Model

Post by johnteater »

I am currently working on the Guillow's Piper Cherokee kit. I have found the decals with the kit break apart in the water while they are soaking, making it impossible to apply to the model.
Is anyone having this trouble?

Bill is right, I restarted the hobby last year with the same kit and had the very same problem. VERY Frustrating. If you don't want to wait for the mail there are 2 products in the LHS and Guillows catalogue that may help, Model Master WPTS 2145 and 2146, both are available from Guillows catalogue or the LHS. These are decal solvent solution and decal setting solution, respectively. Both have benefits for your problems. I have also found (through experience) that if you dont try to straighten the decal when you put it in the water it wont split. Straighten it after the glue has softened like after a minute or so. Another solution is to buy aftermarket decals that are appropriate to your aircraft.

Some of the pictures on the site show that some people are masters of this art, Im not but am trying to improve, maybe some of these pro's will help us both out?

Best of luck,

Just in case you can't get what you want, or you just need something different, don't forget about Callie Graphics http://www.callie-graphics.com/index.php. They are a great resource for modelers.

I did converse with them some weeks ago, and they would be most happy to scale graphics sets to our size...

Probably are pretty old. I've built kits from back as far as 1962, documented with receipts. The Guillows waterslides have been by far better than Sterling, considering age. My Rumpler and Triplane were from back then, and the Robin was probably close. The waterslides were pretty decent, considering age.

Another thing I discovered with old waterslides is to wait longer and soak in cool water. Higher temperature seems to cause them to crack, possibly due to expansion of the backing.
