P40 WarHawk/KittyHawk

Post by Peanut »

Hello! I have recently signed up to your forum, But have used it to get ideas for my own build for a while now.
So I thought I will post my last build I did what was the P40 WarHawk/KittyHawk what I really enjoyed doing :D
1.jpg
I start with the top half of the plans and work my way down, even though I started with the tail surfaces because there nice and easy :)
2014-01-04 14.17.21.jpg
With the tail done I can put them to one side and worry about them later.
8.jpg
Construction of her wing coming together with some slight weight reduction!
I'm hoping I can put together a painted P 40 that will be able to fly even if its a few seconds fingers crossed!

The fuselage is under construction!
3.jpg
This is the way I make sure there straight... not very impressive like a jig but it dose the job!
4.jpg
Now the fuselage is constructed I then concentrated on the landing gear, I plan to make this completely recoverable :D
5.jpg
(forgot to take a picture of the landing gear in its construction stage so all I have is the tail wheel  )
The next stage I do believe is covering the wings, fuselage and tail surfaces! :D

Covering the tail surfaces begins

The tail surfaces are covered, And yes there is some templates I've worked out for... a checked tail
14.jpg
Wings all nicely covered :D
:!: A tip I've came across is when getting the tissue to tighten up on the tail surfaces instead of spraying them with water or using a brush... put your kettle on and just let the steam from the kettle dampen the tissue, some times helps prevent warping :!:

The little thingy...
12.jpg
Covering the fuselage and a tad of paint :D
Just want to point out the nose block I made is really only to help strengthen the cowling in case of a 'nose plant'

Starting to look like a bit like a P40 now, also I wounded if any ones tried converting this kit in to the p36 Curtis...

Here's her underside before she goes of to the paint shop for her desert camouflage :)
17.jpg
Here's her canopy, I painted the inside so there's no chance of it getting chipped of... I hope :D
Must admit I'm quite proud of it haha
18.jpg
I'm using a airbrush to reduce the chance of any added weigh, also I think airbrushing you get a nice even finish.
2014-07-10 16.29.16.jpg
The colours used was Humbrol enamel... Matt 225 sand, Matt 29 earth, Matt 157 blue, Matt 60 red (nose) , Matt 154 yellow checkers and last is the Matt 33 black
So if any one wanted to know there you go

She's looking good so far really pleased with this :)

Now.... the famous checkers 8)
19.jpg
Must admit this was very very tedious and would recommend regular brakes from it as it may drive you mad haha
But here is the finished checkers on the ruder

Really enjoyed this build, and I'm thinking in the future maybe I should try making the p36 Curtis out of this kit :D
But I need more practice before I undergo a challenge like that!
I'm currently working on a bf 109 that I would like to post on hear so when its done or near completion I shell do so :)
And when I get time I can hopefully see if my fresh out the factory P40 will fly... or just... yeah ya no

Here's one last picture of her for now, maybe when the bf is done I can get a picture of them both :)

That is fantastic! I have a hurricane and a spitfire in the to-build line up. Seeing your work has me inspired for these projects. When you get a chance, I'd like to see more on how you did the landing gear.

Thank you very much :D
As for the landing gear I just got some pictures hope they help you out, its a bit hard to see what I did with the paper clip because its been painted but when I do my bf109 I will get some pictures of them.

I also did the same to the tail wheel but had to improvise abit...
