Well unfortunately I ran into a problem with the gear box. The thicker the rubber motor the more weight it adds. Also much more strain on the fuselage. I decided to give up on gears at least for now.

Could you modify the front former so it uses the gas motor style mount? Or maybe double up the formers? Also. I was just thinking of maybe you could scratch build a styrene one for strength.

That's a real good point. The designer of the model kit Masayuki Suzuki is a very famous Japanese FF designer. I'm sure if I built the kit it would work. The kit is kind of a sport model and probably would fly fine with or without the gears. Another problem is with the thicker motor is that it will only handle about half as many winds as a thinner motor. The gears should make up the difference but they don't. I have to admit that my results are tainted by the book Flying Scale Models. Although they don't really say why it won't work they do mention that it probably won't work to use gears.
