Laser cutting

Post by John1963 »

Yeah it would be nice to see guillow's laser cut but at what expense. The kits are already ungodly expensive now.How much more will it add to the cost?Just a thought.

Expensive compared to what others?

They are an extremely good value considering, in my opinion anyways.

I'm not knocking them.I've been building them for a long time.As far as the other kits go,when you get high quality wood and tissue and acurate plans it makes up for the cost.I build my planes to fly not hang from the ceiling.I am working on a 1000 series THUNDERBOLT.I cut myy kit from a set of plans.Have had the kit around for years. But say buy the kit today($40.00)quality woodand tissue($20.00-30.00)all of a sudden your into some money.Like I say I build mine to fly so I just look at it from a different point of veiw.Should have some pics up of my T-Bolt build next week along witha couple of other projects.

Heck, I would just be happy to see the kits use better quality wood and have it printed and not die crushed. I like my planes to fly, but not for competition. I like Guillows designs and I now just print the parts on better quality balsa and cut the parts out myself. Laser cut would be nice but I don't know if it is cost effective for Guillows to go this route.

Guillows prices

Post by jerry l campbell »

I don't agree, there is nothing expensive about Guillow's kits. When I built the series 400 Zero almost forty years ago it cost about 12.95 or so. A cadilac cost $5,000 and I was earning $3500 a year. Guillow's are not only inexpensive they are a bargain. You spend what on a two hour movie or go to dinner at a decent resturant and what do you spend and how long does it last. I can't believe any one can feel that Guillow's is expensive. Find something else to complain about. Encourage Guillow's to add more to their line of kits even if it cost a little more, because they are worth it.

Not complaining per say.Things are actually cheaper in todays money.Im just saying when you spend 40.oo dollars for a kit to use just a set of plans thats kinda crazy.I have both my T-bolt kit and Corsair and Never cut into them just cause the date back to the 70's.Put good wood and tissue and rubber in the kits and I'd be happy as all get out.Today I looked at some 500 series kits $10.95.One and a half years ago at the same hobby shop $5.99 thats what I'm talking about at what cost will a kit rise if and when they start laser cutting? :D

I think laser cut would be nice, but that takes time and money and I don't know if Guillows is willing to do that. I think if they just used better quality wood and not die crush the balsa they would be just fine. I am building a P40 that is a newer kit and 2 of the 4 sheets is good quality and all the die cut is non crushed. If the whole kit had the same quality of wood it would make building these planes a lot easier. I use elmers white glue and because of the quality of die cut I was able to build the fuselage in one day. Normally building a Guillows kit takes time because I am always repairing or replacing the die crushed parts. Lets face it, even with higher quality wood these will never be competition level flyers, but that is ok by me. I would just like to be able to use the kit wood and have the plane fly for 30 seconds or so, and this can happen if they used better wood. Also how much more would each kit cost with better wood? I will post pictures of my P40 build.

Might have said this on another post but... I hope that Guillow's does not laser cut their 900, 500, 600, 700 series models. Unless, somehow they could keep the price down. I just bought the 500 Series Avenger from my LHS. $10.29.
That's a deal. It will likely fly o.k. , nice scale outlines and detail. On the next shelf was some Peck Polymer kits. Nice kits, and probably fly real well but, they were $16.00 to $20.00. The Guillow laser cut ones are nice. I've got their SE5A, laser cut.(a birthday gift). Great kit. 9.75 lbs/cu.ft balsa. Notches and overall parts fit is very good. Retail I think is $33.00. What I would like to see is Guillow sell just the plans for their old 100 series, or maybe with print sheetwood, in a cheap, plain brown box.
