Model building books

Post by Ranger Rob »

After many, many years I want to return to model building. I want to start very simply with a snap-toghether kit and progress to a stick-built kit. I would like some suggestions on some good books to get me started in both areas. Suggestions much appreciated. Ranger Rob

By snap-together I'll assume you mean plastic models, in which case I can't help you there as my first model was a glue together B-52 and I never looked back. I'm sure there are plenty of generic modeling resources that can apply to both plastic and wood so I will just focus on books/resources that I am aware of that pertain to wooden models.

Don Ross's Books are great for free flight on rubber power and sort of useful for other power sources and controlled flight. A lot in the R/C world has changed in recent years which really out dates that part of his two books.

Mike's flying scale model pages are a great online resource for free flight, especially rubber powered.

I would be remiss to not also mention the Virtual Aerodrome as a great resource to see how others build their planes and to ask questions on their techniques.

Good forums are Small Flying Arts for all things flying related and RCGroups for all things R/C related.

RangerRob,
You said "return to model building", what is your previous experience building models? SteveM gave some good sources, I can vouch for most of them. The Don Ross books are available from Guillow, also.

RR...I too would say that the Don Ross books are a good resource. My personal choice, however, would be to stick with Mikes website.....Luck, JGJ

Thanks for your suggestions. I'll get busy looking on-line and ordering the Ross books. In answer to supercruiser, my last build was a stick-built, U-control power plane, very small, I built 60 years ago. You can see that the memory bank is empty. Thanks, all.

RR...just occurs to me that the Guillows 500 series model kits include a VERY GOOD instruction booklet that will carry you through any kind of balsa and tissue build..........Luck, JGJ
