Criticism, constructive and negative

I am certainly happy that I don't know how to post pictures here. I'm not saying my building is bad, but what I turned out 70 years ago were exquisite compared to now. Big, trembly, shaky, clumcy fingers do an abominable job of putting together. That certainly doesn't make me incapable of having true appreciation for what I see here in this forum. The wost planes pictured here are what I would call truly great. Dave, I saw the pictures you posted (and I really appreciate that), and I am totally dumbfounded.

Even with tilted, upside-down,backward, skewed stars, all I see is a well-built aircraft, I would be proud to own.

So if anyone wants to criticize, I will gladly post my last 3 builds and let everybody go at it. The problem will be that all you will laugh yourselves sick and not be able to type.

Enough already! All of you should be ashamed of yourselves. i have watched this mini-drama unfold from afar and bit my tongue. There are some darn good builders on here who delight in getting "pats on the back" from many others who are not so good. The whole purpose of this hobby is to build good enough to suit yoruself, not some arrogant person who has nothing better to do than post their pics on here to acquire hollow accolades. You know what, I have no titles to post, I am a nobody. I am just an enthusiast. I have not spent the past 30 years building. If a guy builds a plane and the star is upside down, so freaking what. It is his plane and his build. I am leaving this forum. I have learned much here, yet sadly it has become like any other competitive thing in our society. I liked it better when people were polite and helpful. Now I see the wretched reality. Gosh, post smething else besides this anal retentive diatribe about an upside down star or whose model is better. You sound like a bunch of five year old kids. You know what, I hope this post ticks off a lot of people, becuase if it does, that means the truth has gotten out. It takes a lot of time to build these models. Some of us have more time than others. Some of us need a reality check and a bit more compassion. Instead of critisicm we should be encouraging and helpful. Just remember, you did not become an expert overnight. This hobby will not be around in the future if we do not cultivate new people and help them and accept them.

So many times on this forum have we had the experience of trying to help someone who does'nt understand instructions, drawings, explanations, material characteristics, and any other malady or problem someone is experiencing and come to find out they have'nt read a single word of instruction furnished in the kit. Then, to have someone wave their laurels about to have us accomadate somebody oh so special, who is not able to follow instructions written for 14 year olds,and then is insulted when someone so much as gives him a whiff of a razzing,ooohh boo hooo. Well, if you can't play in the sand box with the boys, I've heard the girls are much,much nastier. As for the guy with the incorrect decal he asked and he was told, quit whining.

It also explains why I am receiving more personal messages when someone has a question about a build, they are too afraid to post here. I think of myself as an ok builder and flyer of Guillows models and that is why I don't mind criticism as long as it is helpful to others. My building techniques are a little barbaric and not always the latest and greatest, but it works so I stick with it. I have been heavily criticised on other forums for the following..
1. Building and flying Guillows models with no modifications.
2. Building with white kids glue.
3. Covering with domestic tissue.
4. Using Aerogloss Dope on tissue.
5. Attaching tissue with 50/50 glue.
6. Flying my models with a trim tab.
And the list goes on but I keep chugging along posting my builds hoping to inspire others. Lets face it people, this is a dying hobby and we all need to work together to keep it going. So keep building and asking questions it good for everyone and the hobby itself.

That's pretty much how I build.

Guillows diecut out of the box, Titebond glue, kit tissue, Sig dope, sticking the tissue on, wet with 50/50 white glue.

If Guillows had a flag I'd prob'ly hang it from my front porch. I love these things for their great plans and instructions. The enclosed brochures show most of the techniques that work to build a good model. The details on them go for what I think is a presentable representation of the real thing. The hours of enjoyment I've had from building is priceless. I've had my times of ignorance and idiotic questions and at times need to be slapped or hit with a stick to awaken the old synapses, but I never thought anyone on this form intentionally tried to demean anybody by their critique on any builds, but to some thin skinned, fragile ego'ed paranoics any slight muse gets blown out of proportion and the fray begins. I don't think anyone who is a true modeler is going to abandon this forum,but see these precious few for what they are. They will be on their way to sow their seeds in some other public entity and we may go about our hobbies as usual.Have a good day.

An easy 10 seconds of research can save a modeler a lot of embarrassment and give them greater pride and confidence that they have accurately modeled the real aircraft.
