Junior Contest Endurance And Semi-Scale Question

here are pic's of a Cessna 180 that says 'Semi-Scale' on the box and

a Javelin that says 'Endurance' on it.

what's the goal here?

if the Javelin goes the furthest it wins?

what do you do with the Cessna 180?

the javelin and lancer are designed with the singular goal of flying well. the cessna 180 and piper super cub are designed to resemble actual aircraft and fly better than they would if they were designed exactly to scale. i guess you could say they're for somebody who wants some of both worlds, scale and endurance flying.

i looked through AMA rules on their website and

couldn't find Junior Contest.

i'll keep looking for Junior Contest rules.

Junior Contest may be something that Guillow concocted by themselves. I've not seen Junior Contest on any other balsa model kit by other manufacturers. Or it could be a hold over from long ago; Guillow has been selling balsa models for several decades. I would be interested to know if there were Nationally held Junior Contest events featuring Guillow models.

yes, "junior contest" is a licensed trademark of paul k. guillow, inc. i think they came up with it in the 1960s, and intended to have 1 more series (800). it was to consist of a taylorcraft which i think was to have a 28" wingspan, and an endurance model whose name i cannot remember which was to have a 34" wingspan. it would be awesome if guillow's could someday put those into production. (although i know quite well that will never happen)

Simpleflyer posted that earlier about the 800 series. The model you are thinking of is the "Harpoon".

They were Stage I,II, and III models.

the 700 Series kits say 'Contest Flyer' in addition

to having the 'Junior Contest' logo on the box.

i think the Fairchild 24 is made to fly in a certain AMA event.

couldn't tell you what it is right now!

then it's almost a slam dunk the Arrow fits in one of the AMA Free Flight classes.

Guilllows Model Builders

700 Series are Stage 2 kits.

the Arrow and the Fairchild 24 say 'Stage 2 Model Kit' on the boxes.

on the 600 Series box where 'Stage 1' might have used to be there is 'Build By Number'.

that just seems like salesmanship repackaging.

would have never known Build By Number were Stage 1 if Simpleflyer

hadn't come up with that ad.
