cox engines for free flight ?

I was going through some boxes the other day. And I found some old cox motors from crashed CL planes. When I was a young teenager I tried my hand at CL flying. It didn't work out so well. And since I found the old engines, I was wondering if anyone here has tried gas powered free flight. Specificly Guillows planes with cox engines. I have one .020 pee wee and two .049 engines and one fox .15 The fox .15 is to big for most of Guillows planes. But the other two sizes are perfect, At least thats what it says on all of the plans. I would love to hear some stories about this, good or bad.

I hope to try this some day as well. Hope some folks get the info to you so that you will be able to work out the bugs. The plans for the Lancer show some great info on free flight with a .020 Cox engine, even has some ideas on a timed stab. You are lucky to have the engines since the .020 Cox is out of production , the .049 is still made but the Cox company is out of business and that engine is made by another company. Check out the Lancer plans if no one ha sany more info , this may be enough to get you started.

Never tried it myself. It's on my list of builds. I have an Cox .010 planned for a Guillow model, not sure which one,yet.

WRT the current cox engines; a company bought the inventory of Cox, and is reselling them, but they are not machining new cylinders or pistons or or. Basically when they are gone they are gone.

I have flown a 400 mustang on .020, it was a big thrill. I was maybe 13. It soared up over some trees in a headwind, and then turned around when the engine ran out of gas, and glided right back down! awesome.

Now I need a new brass mounting plate for my .020, I damaged 2 of the 4 mounting holes.

Lots of these motors on ebay all the time.

I have thought of this also...I recomend...

very very very little gas... no more than 30 seconds... otherwise say good bye to your model...

When I was a kid I built a Dumas Sioux (I think I still have the plans) and put a Cox .049 on the front. The Cox .049 Babe Bee reed valve engine came on a blister pack and cost $3.95 new. My brother and I chased that model half-way across the county on our bicycles! What a great airplane. Does anyone remember using 'Fox Missile Mist fuel' and a No.1 battery?

From this we learned........ DON'T PUT TOO MUCH FUEL IN THE TANK!

It flew in big right-hand circles and was a beautiful sight to see up there in the sky.

I have got 3 Dr-1 triplanes 2 Guillows and 1 sterling. I think I will use the .020 pee wee on one of the Guilows for free flight. The other one rubber power, and the sterling R/C.
