Cox .049 model aircraft engines

Hello builders,

We know that a lot of the flying world is going electric, but who among us does not miss the sound of a Cox engine powering our plane or the smell of the fuel. I know we were sad when Cox / Estes stopped manufacturing and selling the small glow engines, we have them on a lot of our kit boxes and plans.

The Cox engines have been hard to find and we have had many calls regarding them. I just came across a company that is selling them on the internet and just thought I would pass the information along to you modelers.

I am sure that most builders (me included) will stick with the trend and continue to use electric motors to power our builds but for those that want the nostalgia of an .049 glow engine on their plane it's nice to see that we can get them.

I knew about a Canadian source but, that has it's problems. The link you gave is for a USA location.

Cox .049 powered Guillow Spirit of St. Louis is on my build list.

Not a glow, but you can do a reasonable fake with a geared inrunner and GWS HD prop. A few folks have thought my electric Guillow's Cessna 172 was glow powered.

PS: I looked at that Cox engine site, and the .049 car engine brought back memories of my Cox Volkswagon Van that drove a pattern controlled by a cam.

..and I had the Cox Dune Buggy.

I had a lot of fun with .049s back as a teenager. I'd built a Sterling Super Cruiser ( I think?) and it came out way too heavy for the electric setup I had. On went a Black Widow, and that plane looped and hung on the prop like it was possessed. Some fun days.

Yorktowne Hobby on York Road in Baltimore County Maryland has a VERY large stock of Vintage Cox and other Engines.

I guess 7 of the .049 will tide me over for a little bit.

I don't fly glow, but does anyone know if the Norvel 1/2A engines are still in production? They got good reviews when they first came out and seems like they might be a good alternative to Cox.

Too bad the .020 engines are gone. Any one know of a place other than ebay to get an .020?
