My first attempt at flight was last weekend.
First flight with 100 turns on the motor and windy with a old 3/16 rubber band one loop.
Flew about 50 feet and knocked over with wind gust no damage.
Second attempt broken rubber band at 200 turns. NO Lube.

This weekend 12/3
First flight with rubber band from my wife's office (see picture) 4 short loops tied, really strong rubber, proper lube
(glycerin). calm almost no wind.
Flew very fast and straight, lasted about 15 seconds motor unwound popped nose cone, no glide, hard crash.

Lessons learned:
Don't fly when windy. Lube motor. Use proper rubber band. Use magnets on nose cone for glide.

4 loops, wow that is a lot of power.......Damage doesn't look too bad.

Thanks for the advice Phugoid I will laminate a couple of pieces in the front. I had 1/16 strips on the back but that did not help.
I will also fill in the space between the stingers, I don't like adding nose weight . Scigs you are correct, way to much torque/power.
In my haste to fly I forgot to count the turns and just wound it until the fuselage felt like it was going to implode.

Blimey we are all falling apart! I've got a spinal angiography next week which I'm not looking forward to!

Get well soon guys.

Had a go with white glue 50/50 a la scigs and Phugoid last night and I have to say I really liked it. I think it will be my method of choice from now on. A few errors but otherwise a good trial.

I just want to know where you guys are getting the kits with the nice light colored wood. My fuse sides look like tree bark. Not just any tree bark. It looks like Shag Bark Hickory. I will post pics as soon as can. I'll be working on this over the next few days.

Send it back to Guillows if it is too heavy. Just because it is a darker color does not always mean it is heavy.

Scigs,
I's not too heavy at all. I was just commenting because the quality of balsa is such a coin flip with these kits. Quality can mean everything from weight to punkiness to color or whatever makes you think it's sub-par. For this kit I am not concerned. I normally scratch build all of my planes so I have balsa to substitute whatever I feel is unacceptable. It will be a fun quick build and probably fly fairly well no matter what the wood is. I think everyone is doing great work on this thread so far.
