Anyone Doing Any Building?
Is anyone starting/building/completing any kits these days?
I'm off work with a work-induced hernia so I think I might finally finish
covering my Cessna 180 soon.
I have other Guillow's kits to start as well,Porter,Fairchild,Bird Dog,
Cessna 170,Super Cub(602)

Re: Anyone Doing Any Building?
Well, let's see. This weekend's contest is the Don Martin Cup for rubber powered helicopters, ornithopters and wingless autogyros. I built another one of my Air Augers last Saturday and trimmed it on Sunday morning so I won't be trimming this one at the contest. My Sillycopter is so beat up that I need to build another one. I'll use the same rotor hub so that will take about an hour. I have a fuselage and tail that I can use for an autogyro so it will take a couple of hours to make another rotor hub, mount and rotor.
The Limited Pennyplane contest is a week from Wednesday. It only takes about an hour to build one using CA but I can't get to the gym this Wednesday so I will be trimming that one at the contest.
Next month's OFFC contest is Legal Eagle and I have my One Night in Jail where I took the Legal Eagle concept a bit too far.
The October OFFC contest is Unlimited Scale so I will have to finish the Guillow's Piper Cub 95 that I started kit bashing into an L-4 a few years back.

I like the Sillycopter
Nice looking plummage on your Legal Eagle.
The L-4 conversion sounds very interesting KF.

Well, the Limited Penny Plane contest at the OFFC next Wednesday is a non-starter. Once again a doctor has scheduled an appointment for me on a Wednesday morning. I swear, sometimes I think these doctors don't want me to fly. Getting old ain't for sissies. The Don Martin Cup, helicopter contest is on Sunday Morning. I will have the Air Auger and a new Sillycopter there. My new autogyro (I don't have a name for that one.) will be a bit iffy.

Re: Anyone Doing Any Building?
I made the mistake of thinking that the contest was last Sunday and went to the 'Grassy Knoll'. I got some flying in anyway and trimmed out the Air Auger for today's contest. However, Bill Watson saw it fly and realized that his current rubber powered helicopter wasn't going to cut it so he built four new models and brought the best one to the contest this morning. Dave Gee also built new models this week and brought them to the contest. I refreshed my Sillycopter but it wasn't doing that well this morning so I went with the Air Auger.
I finished third with 98.2 seconds. Bill was first with 143.4 seconds and Dave was second with 112.6. Dave finished first in ornithopter. I didn't finish my Chinook or my autogyro but no one else showed up with them either. Every participant was given a "Don Martin Cup".
The late Don Martin hated helicopters which was why the club named the contest after him but for many years he was a good sport about it and showed up at the contest to award prizes.

Re: Anyone Doing Any Building?
I recently finished my first ever Peanut Scale build- an old Peck Polymers DH-60 Gypsy Moth. Man, those models are fragile! All 1/16 and 1/20 sticks!
I built it primarily as an oddball contribution to a Britmodeler forum group build. (Primarily a scale plastic site. ). I also used it as an opportunity to try EZ-dope, which worked out pretty well.
I won’t fly it, as I really doubt I got the incidence of the two lower wing panels equal (with their simple butt-joint mount to the fuselage.)

Re: Anyone Doing Any Building?
I didn't get the L-4 finished in time for the contest (What a surprise!) and I decided to fly one of my Beavers. Unfortunately, while getting out of the car I dropped it on its tail. By the time I got it repaired and trimmed again the official flights were over. Next year!
This month's contest is A-6. Now A-6 isn't usually my thing but I built one just to prove that I could. We have a few serious indoor guys in that group who regularly get six minute flights under that 22 foot ceiling and they thought that I couldn't build light until they saw my P-18 design fly a couple of months back. (No, that's not film covering in the photo, I happened to find some very light produce bags.)
I'll surprise them at the trimming session but I won't be at the contest. It's the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, prep day and I won't be able to squeeze in enough time to go to the session. (I'm not one of those guys who leaves everything to his wife. ) Maybe I can get someone to proxy fly it for me.

Re: Anyone Doing Any Building?
Hello everyone!! I am beginning the RC conversion build of an enlarged P-40 kit 501. I built the static display back when I was a much younger fella. The display model is long gone but I managed to save the plans all these years. I have enlarged those plans 200% from a 16.5" WS to a 33" WS. I believe the kit is a E/F model, based on the cowling and air scoop, however, I will be making this a B model... so there will be a lot of balsa dust flying around as I make that front clip. Gonna have to make this as light as possible or plan on putting larger electronics into the frame as I build. Not sure if I want to balsa sheet and paint or cover this with Oracover (since it seems the coverings I knew 15 years ago are no longer available).
Basing this aircraft on one that was issued to the 20th Pursuit Group/55th Pursuit Squadron in early 1941 (pictures attached). The 20th FW/OW and the three squadrons that make up this phenomenal unit (77th, 79th, and 55th) are near and dear to me. This was my unit when I arrived at Shaw AFB in 1994. They have a storied history and I plan to model many aircraft these brave men flew.
Contemplating on making a VLOG of this build on YouTube. Any advise on how to accomplish that would be most helpful.

Yes. I liked this one too!
My version is from a "25 cent" Comet kit. It flies rather well also.
